For many AV integrators, drafting looks like a straightforward labor expense.

You hire a CAD operator or engineer, pay an hourly wage or salary, provide the tools they need, and keep the work in-house.

But salary alone does not tell you what drafting capacity actually costs.

For smaller and mid-sized integrators in particular, the bigger question may be **who is doing the drafting, how much engineering capacity it consumes, and what that employee could be doing instead.**

That is where the real cost starts to emerge.

This capacity analysis is part of [**The Signal Chain**](https://avdesignlabs.com/the-signal-chain), AV Design Labs' resource series focused on practical engineering and business challenges facing today's integrators.

## Start With the Labor Cost

NSCA's [**2024 Compensation & Benefits Report**](https://www.nsca.org/compensation-benefits-report/) provides an AV-specific benchmark for what technical employees are being paid.

The report includes median hourly compensation benchmarks for positions including CAD Operators, Systems/Design Engineers, Project Engineers, and Lead Designers. We won’t share those figures here due to restricted access to the NSCA report, but integrators can use the report to benchmark compensation for these and other technical positions within their own organizations.

In that report, NSCA defines a CAD Operator as someone who prepares shop drawings and blueprints for new or existing systems. A Systems/Design Engineer, meanwhile, is responsible for pre-sales system design, understanding system components and integration points, and resolving advanced technical problems.

**That distinction matters.**

A dedicated CAD resource performing drafting work is one cost equation. An engineer spending a meaningful percentage of the week producing and revising drawings is another.

And hourly compensation is only part of the expense. The true cost of maintaining an employee also includes benefits, payroll costs, software, hardware, training, recruiting, management time, and other overhead. NSCA's report tracks employer costs for health insurance, retirement plans, bonuses, dental coverage, life insurance, and other benefits in addition to compensation.

## What Happens When the Engineer Is Also the Drafter?

This is where the equation becomes particularly important for smaller and mid-sized integrators.

Based on what AV Design Labs sees in the market, larger integration companies are more likely to have dedicated drafting resources. At smaller and mid-sized firms, engineers are more likely to handle at least some of the drafting themselves.

AV Design Labs estimates that an engineer responsible for drafting may spend **20% to 30% of the workweek** on CAD, Revit, drawing revisions, and related documentation.

For a 40-hour employee, the math looks like this:

| **Engineering Capacity Used for Drafting** | **20%** | **30%** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hours per week | 8 | 12 |
| Hours per year | 416 | 624 |
| Equivalent 40-hour workweeks | 10.4 | 15.6 |
| At an estimated $75/hr loaded engineering rate | **$31,200** | **$46,800** |

In other words, one engineer could be spending the equivalent of **10 to nearly 16 full workweeks per year on drafting-related work.**

The $31,200 to $46,800 figure should not be interpreted as guaranteed cash savings from outsourcing. It represents the estimated value of engineering capacity being allocated to drafting.

That leads to a more important question:

"What could that engineer be doing with those hours instead?"

## Calculate the Opportunity Cost

Every hour spent drafting is an hour that cannot simultaneously be spent somewhere else.

Depending on the integrator, those hours could support:

- System design
- Pre-sales engineering
- Project reviews
- Customer interaction
- Field support
- Programming
- Technical problem-solving
- Engineers routinely absorb drafting work
- Qualified drafting talent is difficult to find
- Turnover creates recurring capacity gaps
- Workload fluctuates significantly throughout the year
- Project spikes push existing technical teams beyond capacity

The issue is not whether drafting is valuable. It is essential to successful project delivery.

The question is whether **drafting is the best use of limited engineering capacity.**

For an organization struggling with engineering bandwidth, freeing even eight hours per week gives an engineer roughly one additional workday to focus on higher-level technical responsibilities.

Across a team of three engineers, that could represent **1,248 to 1,872 hours of engineering capacity annually**, depending on how much time each person currently spends drafting.

## Staffing for Peak Demand Creates Another Cost

Internal drafting demand is rarely perfectly consistent.

Projects overlap. Submittal deadlines converge. Large opportunities enter the pipeline. Then workloads ease.

NSCA's [**2025 Financial Analysis of the Industry**](https://www.nsca.org/resources/industry-research/financial-analysis-of-the-industry-report/) illustrates that capacity challenge. The report found that 76% of responding companies track utilization. Thirty-four percent reported operating at full capacity, while another 29% reported partial capacity but full utilization. Smaller firms were also the most likely to report being over capacity and hiring.

Drafting already reflects a more flexible staffing approach than other technical positions. The 2025 report found that **69.3% of drafting positions were staffed by employees**, compared with 79.2% of engineering positions.

**That creates a staffing challenge.**

Build your internal drafting team for peak workload and you may carry unused capacity when demand slows.

Staff for your average workload and your team can become overloaded when several projects hit at once.

Flexible capacity offers another option: **scale drafting resources with demand rather than permanent headcount.**

## Recruiting and Attrition Belong in the Equation

There is another cost that is more difficult to capture in a spreadsheet: finding and retaining qualified AV drafting talent.

Finding someone who knows CAD or Revit is one thing. Finding someone who also understands commercial AV documentation, standards, workflows, and system requirements narrows the talent pool considerably.

**Then there is attrition.**

Even after an integrator finds and develops a strong drafting resource, that employee can leave. The company must recruit again, onboard another employee, transfer institutional knowledge, and potentially ask existing engineers to absorb the workload in the meantime.

For an outside drafting and engineering partner, maintaining that technical capability is the business itself.

That does not automatically make an outside resource the right answer. It does mean **continuity and scalability belong in the cost analysis alongside hourly rates.**

And when evaluating an outside resource, cost should not be the only consideration. We covered several of those factors in [**5 Red Flags to Watch for When Choosing an AV Engineering Partner**](https://avdesignlabs.com/the-signal-chain/5-red-flags-av-engineering-partner).

## The Better Question: What Capacity Should You Own?

In-house drafting is not inherently inefficient.

For an integrator with predictable volume and enough recurring work to keep dedicated drafting resources productive, maintaining an internal team may make perfect sense.

The equation changes when:

- Engineers routinely absorb drafting work
- Qualified drafting talent is difficult to find
- Turnover creates recurring capacity gaps
- Workload fluctuates significantly throughout the year
- Project spikes push existing technical teams beyond capacity

At that point, the decision is no longer simply:

**“Is outsourcing cheaper than hiring?”**

A better question is:

**“What technical capacity should we maintain internally, and where do we need the flexibility to scale?”**

For many integrators, the answer may be a combination of both. Maintain the internal technical resources that are critical to the business, then use an outside drafting and engineering partner to add capacity when workload demands it.

The goal is not simply to reduce the cost of drafting.

**It is to make sure your most valuable technical resources are spending their time where they create the most value.**
